Sea of change for digital packaging

Case Studies, General News

Presentation summary of Thomas Reiner keynote address at the SPC Open House

In a far-reaching keynote speech that kept a packed audience at the SPC Open House spellbound for almost an hour, CEO and co-owner Berndt+Partner Group, Thomas Reiner focused on two major packaging industry trends – digitization and sustainability.

Brand owners and retailers determine demand and set requirements for packaging. A fast time to market, low minimum orders to reduce waste and changing consumer behaviour like growing demand for e-commerce solutions are all among the reasons why organisations and brands have to rethink business models.

“Compelling Trends Driving Digital Transformation in Packaging” was the theme of the presentation at the Durst Innovation Center East in Lienz, Austria, given by Mr Reiner, the founder of Berndt + Partner, the packaging and communication consultants with a network of offices across the world.

To underpin a message of the vital importance of sustainability, Mr Reiner used a mixture of graphics and varied fact sources to get his message across. “Converters are in deep waters” was one where he pointed out that whereas 78% of converters recognize sustainability as an opportunity, only 12% have a strategy to address the issue.

Waste has been recognized as a problem that has been escalating since the 1980s, climate change concern has been particularly growing in the 2000s but now the combination of climate and waste is going to cause a massive disruption.

Regardless of where people are in the packaging value chain, there is an unmistakable transition to a circular economy, a subject on everybody’s agenda. Coupled with legislative risk of the Green Deal, converters are going to have to be agile and adaptable to be able to thrive in the unfolding paradigm.

Consumers are taking an active role. Whether it’s renewable, recyclable or biodegradable inputs for production or recovering resources and materials from end-of-life products, brands and retailers are responding with their sustainability strategies.

Mr. Reiner quoted Larry Fink (Chairman and CEO BlackRock) “With the impact of sustainability on investment returns increasing, we believe that sustainable investing is the strongest foundation for client portfolios going forward.”

In his keynote speech, Mr Reiner also covered digital transformation and provided examples of brands and retailers moving towards more sustainable packaging. A move in the right direction is that 70% of US branded companies already design their packaging to be suitable for e-commerce.

Companies and individuals need to close the gap on the fast rate of change in technology advances where the market shifts from supply driven to a demand driven basis.

There is a major disconnect between consumer expectations and industry agility with respect to time to market. Mr Reiner showed a graph where the reality is a 198-day time for new product variant, the CMO perception and aspiration is actually 90 and 30 days respectively, yet the consumer expectation is nearer to one day!

Change is coming! As Mr Reiner concluded with a quote from Albert Einstein:

“The purest form of madness is to leave everything as it is and hope that something will change at the same time.”

The Royal Group’s new Koenig & Bauer Durst SPC 130 press offers customers high-quality mass customization

Case Studies, General News

The Royal Group (TRG), one of the largest independent corrugated box and display manufacturers in the U.S., with more than 30 locations nationwide, has invested in a Delta SPC 130 Automatic single-pass press from Koenig & Bauer Durst to provide mass customization and high-volume, fully automated digital production to its customers.

The six-color press, now installed at TRG’s Mid-Atlantic Packaging site near Philadelphia, gives customers the flexibility to print unique versions of high-quality graphics for brands and brand extensions, allowing for mass customization at a large scale.

It’s one of many TRG solutions, which range in scope from industrial packaging and brown box shipping containers to high-end graphic packaging, ecommerce, in-store displays and shelf-ready packaging. These products serve a diverse array of markets, including retail, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, health and beauty, agriculture, tech and home goods, among others.

The Delta SPC 130 Automatic, with its sustainable food grade certified water-based ink technology, provides specific solutions for the food and retail packaging and display industry. The new single-pass press reduces lead times and provides excellent print quality, equivalent to flexo and offset production. Transferring work from traditional to digital production will empower TRG to meet customer needs as the demand for both corrugated packaging and speed to market grow. The printer’s expanded color range, adding orange and purple to the CMYK color wheel, allows it to achieve more than 90% of the 3,000+ Pantone colors, including spot coloration for specific brands.

“As both a producer and a converter of corrugated packaging, The Royal Group has made significant investments to acquire the best machinery available in the industry,” said TRG’s Chief Executive Officer Bob McIlvaine. “The investment in the Delta SPC 130 for our Mid-Atlantic site underpins our commitment to process improvement. It will enable us to provide highly automated, world-class printing capabilities at speed while remaining as flexible as possible for our clients as we continue to grow our business. Digital packaging is the future — and we aim to satisfy our customers and meet their needs with innovative solutions.”

“Successful companies such as TRG embrace trends and offer high-impact solutions for their customers,” said Koenig & Bauer Durst Managing Director Robert Stabler. Brand owners want shorter lead times, sustainable manufacturing practices and products that stand out. The Delta SPC 130 Automatic meets all those needs while providing customers with the latest, most reliable and cost effective production method available. We’re happy to deliver a solution that gives both TRG and its customers the capability and competency to mass customize without compromising quality.”

Koenig & Bauer Durst Delta SPC 130 press drives 30% annual digital sales growth for Rondo

Case Studies, General News
  • Corrugated box manufacturer building dedicated digital plant after dramatic surge in digital production
  • Brands demanding change so more flexo work transfers to Delta SPC 130 FlexLine Automatic press
  • Koenig & Bauer Durst providing complete solution that is also providing answers on global debate on use of plastic packaging

Rondo Ganahl, one of the world’s foremost corrugated board and packaging manufacturers, has unveiled plans for a new dedicated digital production plant after a dramatic surge in sales driven by an investment in the Koenig & Bauer Durst Delta SPC 130 FlexLine Automatic press.

The Delta SPC 130 with its water-based ink technology is providing the solutions demanded by brands that are needed for the food packaging industry. With lead times reducing, Rondo says there is huge potential in the technology where the excellent print quality matches litho production.

Sales are racing ahead so fast in digital printing for Rondo that a new digital production plant will be opened on the site at St Ruprecht an der Raab, Austria, in the autumn of 2021. The firm, which is part of the Rondo Group that has six plants across Europe, started digital production two years ago. About 90% of the Rondo digital printing business is for the food industry.

Karl Pucher, Managing Director of Rondo Ganahl, St Ruprecht an der Raab, said: “We come traditionally from flexo and offset printing and had been talking about moving into digital production for a long time. Two years ago, we decided to make the move, and we’re very happy that we did. Digital corrugated production has grown every year between 25 and 30% and customers are making repeat orders, which is very important.

“During these Covid times we see that lead times are going down and artworks are changed a lot at short notice. Being able to print digitally means we are flexible and able to deliver the requirements in a very short time. This is what brands are demanding. The Delta SPC 130 with its water-based technology from Durst is providing the solutions that we need for delivery to the food industry. The growth in sales has been so big that we decided to build a new facility for digital printing. And we hope to move in during the autumn.”

Mr Pucher added: “We did not buy a machine. We bought into a complete system that also includes software for areas such as order management, color management and automation. Digital printing is also providing answers for the global debate on the use of plastic packaging, which obviously extends to food and safety. Using the food safety compliant inks in primary and secondary food packaging means we can create corrugated board packaging to be used as an alternative to plastic. We are in a good place with this system, one that I can very much recommend.”

Robert Stabler, Managing Director, Koenig & Bauer Durst, said: “With fast shifts in demand, converters increasingly recognise that they need a reliable, versatile and all-in-one digital solution to meet brands requirements for fast turnaround of jobs. Rondo is a perfect example of how companies can ensure jobs run seamlessly through their plants by investing in complete workflows and color management systems. We work closely in a partnership approach with Rondo to ensure their teams can meet the new demands, including using the water-based inks to ensure food safety compliance for primary packaging.”
