  • Koenig & Bauer Durst announces customer and beta site details
  • Built on market-proven technology, the VariJET 106 aligns with customer individual requirements
  • Building program accelerates to keep up with folding carton digital printing growth

Würzburg, Germany 04.05.2023

Koenig & Bauer Durst is scaling up its VariJET 106 build program to cope with high demands for digital production in folding carton markets, which it expects to accelerate further this year. The announcement comes as two beta sites get under way and the first commercial customer will start live production in the second half of the year.

Printing starts in May at a first beta site of the VariJET 106 B1 single pass digital press for folding carton markets. A second beta test customer, also in central Europe, will begin a few weeks later. The VariJET 106 is the first joint development between Durst and Koenig & Bauer. The announcements were made at Koenig & Bauer Durst VariJET 106’s Open House at Sheetfed Division of Koenig & Bauer where more than 60 delegates have been hosted in Radebeul, Germany, on April 26-27.

Robert Stabler, Managing Director of Koenig & Bauer Durst, said: “Built on market-proven technology, the VariJET 106 installations represent huge statements to the market – and we are really pleased with the substantial progress that has been made. Production is being ramped up and new machines will become available in the second half of 2023 on the back of the relatively high demand we are witnessing.”

He added: These presses are tailored to individual requirements and afford a major opportunity for those companies that can optimize their production and reduce costs while offering new high added value business models. Challenges like these are what our VariJET 106 has been developed to answer. The VariJET 106 combines the best of both worlds of Koenig & Bauer’s Rapida 106 technology and all the digital know-how and expertise of Durst. It brings together the strengths of digital inkjet and classic offset printing.”

Koenig & Bauer Durst’s VariJET 106 is equipped to be able to address a wide range of applications. The press produces up to 5,500 sheets per hour. It uses water-based inks that comply with all the main food security standards. The inks are also de-inkable which is important to future proof an investment in the light of tightening legislation around recyclability and reusage rates.

Industry analyst and commentator Dr Sean Smyth was the keynote speaker at VariJET 106 Open House in Radebeul. Sustainability, waste reduction targets and potential new European regulations on recyclability among the topics. Backing up the production demos, there were expert discussions on all facets of the printing process including a deep dive into how workflows and analytics support customers to cost effectively manage high volumes of shorter run length print jobs.

Koenig & Bauer Durst expands portfolio with Delta SPC 130 FlexLine Eco+ industrial production press

Events, General News, Innovation

  • Based on market-proven technology, the new press can be upgradeable to Delta SPC 130 FlexLine Automatic
  • Compact drying system
  • New Dynamic Nozzle Management tool will significantly reduce printhead maintenance

Koenig & Bauer Durst has used its latest SPC Open House to announce a new addition to its product portfolio with the unveiling of the Delta SPC 130 FlexLine Eco+ industrial production press for run lengths from one to millions of square metres. The entry-level, compact model will offer corrugated converters a new route into digital packaging or will enhance their current capabilities.

The Delta SPC 130 FlexLine Eco+ press, using water-based, food-safe, sustainable inks, will offer an impressive price performance ratio for converters with media sizes up to 1.3 metres by 2.8 metres. This new press will be fully upgradeable to the Delta SPC FlexLine Automatic press. Sales start now. Based on its established, market-proven Delta SPC 130 FlexLine Automatic press, the new machine will be addressing converters with volumes of between 4 million and 8 million square metres  a year. It also includes a compact drying system.

With more than 60 guests at the SPC Open House at the Durst Innovation Center East in Lienz, Austria, in May, Koenig & Bauer Durst also announced the introduction of Dynamic Nozzle Management (DNM). This tool will significantly reduce the printhead maintenance across its Delta SPC 130 product portfolio, which will be another boost for customers’ productivity.

DNM will become part of the standard package for the Delta SPC 130 portfolio, including the new Eco+ model, and will further reduce the maintenance cycles of the Koenig & Bauer Durst’s industry acclaimed, long-lasting printheads. The tool identifies nozzle clogging and can then be programmed to manage the level of ink being jetted from the head. It ensures that high-quality production is always maintained.

Matthias Krautgasser, Koenig & Bauer Durst’s Delta SPC 130 Product Manager, said: “We have already implemented our automated non-contact cleaning system – DNM will further increase uptime and productivity of our Delta SPC 130 product lineup.  DNM is another tool in our parcel of advanced technologies which will give our customers even more confidence in these challenging times. The DNM will be fitted to all new products, including the Delta SPC 130 FlexLine Eco+ model that will be available from next year. It can also be upgraded to existing customer machines.

“Many of the corrugated converters we are in discussion with have run lengths of between 4-8 million sq/m per year, so the new Koenig & Bauer Durst Delta SPC 130 Eco+ will be perfect for them, with the capability to upgrade to the SPC 130 FlexLine Automatic press later.”

Robert Stabler, Managing Director, Koenig & Bauer Durst, said: “Raw material shortages, cost pressures and mitigation strategies continue to be high on the agenda for customers. Coupled with brand owners demanding that new production methods are reliable, compliant and cost effective, we are confident that our complete product portfolio, including the new Eco+ press from Koenig & Bauer Durst, will meet the rapidly changing requirements. It was clear from discussions at our SPC Open House that converters increasingly need to have the capabilities and competencies to mass customize without any compromise on quality, and all at an effective total cost of ownership, which we provide.”

Compelling trends driving digital transformation in corrugated markets is focus for Koenig & Bauer Durst Open House

Events, General News

  • Koenig & Bauer Durst to unveil important announcements at live event
  • Global packaging expert Thomas Reiner will also provide expert corrugated packaging insights
  • Brand owner and retail thinking will also be among topics under discussion

The challenges facing converters in the corrugated board market will come under the spotlight in Koenig & Bauer’s SPC Open House in Lienz, Austria, on 12 May. The drive where brand owner and retailers are dynamically moving towards a circular economy, digital transformation and sustainability will also be among topics under discussion at the live event.

With travel restrictions easing, converters from mainland Europe and further afield will be converging on the Durst Innovation Center East location in the beautiful eastern Tyrol where the keynote address will be given by global packaging expert Thomas Reiner, co-founder and CEO of Berndt & Partner. How brands are thinking and planning for their digital transformation in the current paradigm will be among the insights he will outline to delegates.

Koenig & Bauer Durst will also use the SPC Open House for important announcements, including product updates, as the world continues to move towards digital production. The theme will be ‘Compelling trends driving digital transformation in corrugated packaging’ – and the day-long event will be preceded by an evening dinner and networking event.

Robert Stabler, Managing Director of Koenig & Bauer Durst, said: “With factors such as intense inflationary pressures and acute product shortages, converters like never before are looking to optimize their production by reducing waste and increasing the value of the goods they supply to their clients.  Reduced lead times and shorter run lengths, coupled with greater forecast unpredictability, are also among the trends driving the surge towards single pass digital printing that helps converters meet evolving demands of brand owners.

“We are incredibly excited about our SPC Open House on May 12 and look forward to welcoming delegates in person to discuss the new challenges and opportunities for the corrugated packaging market. Please reach out to your local Koenig & Bauer Durst local partners for more details.”

A real eye-opener for converters at Koenig & Bauer Durst SPC Open House

Events, General News

  • Industry leaders in corrugated packaging add their voice to the future packaging debate
  • Customers provide insights into their digital journey and brand relations
  • Now team planning third SPC Open House on February 10 2022

Customers have added their voice to the ongoing packaging debate at an ‘inspirational’ second SPC Open House – entitled “New Times, New Challenges and New Opportunities – in Lienz, Austria, organized by Koenig & Bauer Durst.

Jochen Drösel, Chief Sales Officer at Schumacher Group, was a keynote panelist at the event that highlighted future trends, challenges, and opportunities for corrugated board markets, as well as the wider implications for retail and other industries. Breakout sessions at the Durst Innovation Center East also included deep insights into the Delta SPC 130 Automatic single-pass press that uses water-based food-safe inks.

The success of Schumacher Group, an early adopter of Koenig & Bauer’s Delta SPC 130 single pass press for the corrugated packaging market, has led to an investment in a second machine. At the SPC Open House, Mr Drösel shared his perspectives on their relationships with brand owners and digital packaging journey, which Schumacher Group sees as the future for print production in corrugated markets.

Robert Stabler, Managing Director of Koenig & Bauer Durst, said: “This was a truly inspirational event, with real audience interaction and insightful content from leaders in the corrugated industry that generated extremely positive feedback. The perspective brought a new dimension and perspective to the debates we have over the future of packaging.

“Converters need to be ahead of the regulatory change curve and to be ready for the increased focus of brands on sustainability and have the capabilities and competencies to mass customize without any compromise on quality. Brand owners are demanding that new production methods are reliable, compliant and cost effective. Therefore, in a live setting we were able to look at how single pass digital printing helps converters meet the evolving demands of brand owners in a world of shorter lead times, short run lengths and greater forecast unpredictability.”

Koenig & Bauer Durst will be hosting a third SPC Open House at the Durst East Innovation Center, Lienz, on February 10 2022.
