Spotlight on Thailand – See us at Pack Print International!

Events, General News

By Andreas Friedrich, Koenig & Bauer’s Vice President Sales, Asia Pacific

Thailand’s printing industry is thriving, with numerous brand owners serving both domestic and export markets. We’re excited to meet in person at Pack Print International in Bangkok, 17-20 September!

Koenig & Bauer is renowned for its offset machinery and engineering excellence. Durst is known for its advanced digital printing solutions. By combining their strengths, the two companies created a joint venture that developed the VariJET 106 –  a flagship single-pass inkjet folding carton press, unique in the global digital printing market for packaging converting. At this show, we can’t wait to bring this technology closer to our visitors in South East Asia.

Looking at data from the last three event, about 75% of attendees come from Thailand, with the rest representing international visitors across ASEAN and beyond. With such a strong audience, our team is eager to engage with packaging converters exploring digital printing. The VariJET won’t be physically on display, but it will be one of the key topics for discussion. We’ll have plenty of print samples to share and discuss, helping visitors see its potential and benefits firsthand.

With offset-like quality and a modular system combining digital and conventional Rapida offset technology, the VariJET gives converters the best of both worlds. They can choose which products to produce digitally or conventionally, and even add customized features to every sheet. Packaging converters are ready to meet the near-future demands of their brand owners, as already seen in European markets.

Do you want to find out more and be among the first?

Come meet us at our booth N02!

Guest blog by Thomas Goeke, Customer Experience and Marketing, Koenig & Bauer

Knowledge sharing, a celebration of achievements and future-forward approaches with partnerships based on trust… all among the overwhelmingly positive feedback to our recent Open House.

A heartfelt thank you to all the attendees at our ‘Expand Your Business Model’ event over two weeks at our Sheetfed division headquarters in Radebeul, Germany.

I have a strong belief in the need to inspire customers and provide value with our total one-stop shop approach.

It wasn’t just a showcase for die-cutting, folder-gluer and offset and digital printing processes, we were able to communicate our complete value proposition as a trusted partner.

Guests were able to see live demonstrations of integrated, innovative technology in an inspiring environment covering solutions in folding carton, label, commercial, and corrugated board sectors.

We covered everything from high-volume to short-run production, digital and showed the myKana digital ecosystem portal, including AI-supported products that add tangible added value for product optimisation.

One of the undoubted highlights was the “From Zero to Carton Hero” in 15 minutes, the timeframe it takes to complete a folding carton production value chain from sheet to finished product.

And of course, the VariJET digital production machine from Koenig & Bauer Durst was another!

Witnessing the positive reaction from a fully focused audience every day was truly awe-inspiring.

As a one-stop solutions provider, we enable our customers to be successful.

We help them to look beyond products, understand the pain points and develop a profitable business model to help them grow with good guidance.

Sparking new ideas in folding carton with VariJET 106

Events, General News

By Eric Frank, Senior Vice President, Koenig & Bauer

What started as small carton associations banding together to survive the Great Depression has evolved into the unified organization we know today, representing the $12-billion paperboard packaging industry.

The Paperboard Packaging Council is a vibrant community of leaders, innovators and changemakers exclusively dedicated to North American converters of paperboard packaging and their suppliers.

Packaging requirements are evolving faster than ever, driven by sustainability demands, AI-powered advancements, and a shift away from plastics. Brand and retailers are racing to adapt, as are converters.

With all this in mind, I am looking forward to the PPC Spring Conference meeting in Indianapolis from April 23-25 that will have a packed agenda over the three days.

There I will be introducing the latest updates on the VariJET 106, the digital inkjet press, which has been jointly developed by Durst and Koenig & Bauer.

The VariJET uses the know-how from Koenig & Bauer, the leader in offset printing, with Durst’s unparalleled expertise in digital inkjet technology and software. We have reimagined the possibilities by combining the power of these two processes.

Greater geopolitical and societal instability, supply chain challenges, labour shortages, and legislative changes are all among additional factors that make digital production increasingly important in folding carton and corrugated markets.

And now seems to be the perfect time to fully introduce this unique offering to the American market, which is now a key target territory for sales.

The future is now for digital production in folding carton packaging. And I am convinced that the VariJET106 will play an important part in developments.

For those visiting the Spring Conference, I look forward to being there and fostering meaningful connections.

She also shared valuable insights into how Koenig & Bauer is leveraging the latest technology to drive innovation and enhance the customer experience. Both Sanker and Wagner conducted a series of popular one-on-one meetings. Their message to converters was to embrace the future of industrial scale digital production while forging stronger connections between brands and consumers.

Koenig & Bauer’s massive knowledge in sheet and web-fed solutions fueled application developments  in the folding carton segment offering unmatched industrial production volumes and brand level color surpassing all standards in the category. Its RotaJET high-speed industrial digital inkjet web press prints and produces with superior image quality, substrate versatility, and print volume. The VariJET 106 from Koenig & Bauer Durst integrates all the know-how and expertise by combining digital and offset so customers can have the best of both worlds for the ultimate hybrid printing system. The central customer portal, myKyana, offers data-driven productivity tools with real-time production data analysis to help to make smarter decisions faster for positive impact.

“This is a very important event on the digital packaging marketing calendar,” says Sandra Wagner. “It offers strategic-level insights into what printing and converting industry leaders should do to improve and optimize their business. We felt that the tremendous positive reaction we received from the attendees lets us know that we have the correct approach. The Digital Packaging Summit is the leading event for digital printing and digitalization.”

Delivering topline service with a hands-on approach

Events, General News

By André Menge, Service Manager, Koenig & Bauer Durst

It’s been a whirlwind first three months in my new role as service manager for Koenig & Bauer Durst.

Coming from the semi-conductor industry, it was always going to be a steep learning curve. However, everybody has been so accommodating and welcoming as we continue to ramp up our service offering to our international customer base.

Everything is done with the customer always the prime focus. We strive for the highest possible standards and quality – all achieved through direct and open communications.

One of the highlights for me has been practical on-the-job training and meeting so many interesting people. It’s important to be ‘hands-on’ to expand my knowledge base.

Some people unaware of my job title at first were surprised when I wanted to do some practical maintenance during my initial two-week induction.

It’s not just pushing the button and being the voice at the end of a phone.

Having a close working relationship with the technicians who are on site and understanding the service tool is crucial.

My aim has been to soak up as much information as possible in the shortest possible time and get to know my colleagues from within Koenig & Bauer Durst, as well as colleagues from our two parent companies.

Helping to facilitate even better communication between all three companies is an important part of my role, as is visiting the customers to understand their requirements.

It is good to see how all the people are working so closely together. We are a great team!

The corrugated printing market is evolving at breakneck pace. What worked yesterday will soon be outdated.

Unboxing possibilities inside and outside to celebrate summer

Events, General News

At drupa, we certainly enjoyed presenting our technology and hope our many customers found it interesting.

Now as a follow-up, we want to celebrate summer and present a highlight to help keep you fresh and stay cool – designed with a tasty and sustainable flavour in mind!

As part of mission to unbox possibilities by reimagining printing, we have created special limited-edition boxes (only 100 produced) and sent them to customers as a follow-up to drupa.

The outside brown corrugated e-commerce box packaging was printed with our digital water-based white ink on the Delta SPC130.

Inside there is a VariJET 106 printed product, which contains ice cream powder to help keep you cool during the summer. Just mix the powder with milk and freeze to make delicious homemade, creamy chocolate ice cream. Crafted with premium ingredients, the ice cream powder ensures a refreshing, chocolatey taste.

As an added treat, we’ve also enclosed some biodegradable and compostable beeswax wraps for food use that can be used multiple times, thus reducing waste in our environment. The wraps molds effortlessly around the food and containers using just the warmth of our hands. The heat helps ‘weld’ the edges together, creating a secure seal.

The limited-edition box is digitally printed with water-based inks. On one hand with the VariJET 106 on the folding carton boxes and the Delta SPC 130 on the corrugated cardboard packaging.

Both presses ensure precision and quality in every box, making it a perfect gift or a treat for yourself. All details are sharp, personalized and show the latest printing capabilities in one box.

We wish you all a sustainable and sweet summer!

106 press for folding carton markets.

Koenig & Bauer Durst is demonstrating important advances with its digital press systems and software services in folding carton and corrugated markets on its booth (A-31-1, Hall 16) at drupa in Dusseldorf, Germany. The VariJET 106 single pass press, which uses market-proven technology developed by Durst and Koenig & Bauer, is making its public debut at the show, with regular production run demonstrations.

Visitors to the stand can take away a variety of printed samples from the Koenig & Bauer Durst stand. These include applications for markets such as pharmaceuticals, health and beauty products, as well as food and beverage. At drupa, Koenig & Bauer Durst’s VariJET106 is being shown in a hybrid configuration linked to Koenig & Bauer’s industry acclaimed Rapida offset press technology and workflow. There are multiple production runs throughout the show. Latest die cutting and folding gluer technology is also being shown live at the Koenig & Bauer neighbouring booth.

The market-proven Delta SPC 130 used in corrugated markets – another family member in Koenig & Bauer Durst’s single pass digital sheet-fed press portfolio – is also an important focus at drupa. A control station will is set up on the stand to demonstrate how the Delta SPC 130 works in a production environment utilising Durst Workflow and Durst Analytics.

Koenig & Bauer Durst’s Delta SPC 130 and VariJET 106 systems feature in daily shows at 11.45am and 2.45pm in English. There are also demonstrations of folding box production shows together with Koenig & Bauer with the VariJET 106 at 10.45am and 4:30pm in English as well as at 2:00pm in German.

Game-changing industry firsts such as the announcement of printing on mainly brown substrates with water-based digital white are being shown. Koenig & Bauer Durst is the first company in the world to offer digital white ink for corrugated substrates in primary food packaging. This creates new possibilities in packaging, for example printing on plain brown or lower grade white boards.

Daniel Velema, Managing Director of Koenig & Bauer Durst, said: “Visitors to our drupa stand in Hall 16 can be assured of a warm welcome. The VariJET 106 – our major digital development in folding carton markets – is now a reality. See for yourself this highly versatile machine that will be running samples on a regular basis. Some of these have been produced in Switzerland by SCHELLING AG, one of our customer sites. We’re also showing game-changing industry firsts such as our breakthrough involving printing on mainly brown substrates with water-based digital white for corrugated substrates in primary food packaging.

All Koenig & Bauer Durst presses use water-based food-safe inks & coatings that comply with all regulatory requirements.
